Identity

WRITING PIECE 3: Expository Piece

Prompt: ???It is difficult to maintain a strong sense of individual identity in our society, but it is not impossible.???

Sometimes it is a struggle to be true to oneself and maintain a strong sense of individual identity when one is part of a community. Individuality, which is an expression of personal freedom, is often subverted into a myriad of different directions. Although these words indicate that it can be difficult to maintain a strong sense of identity, it is not impossible. The influences that others have on us throughout our lives do impact the development of our personalities. The Media may be able to manipulate the decisions that we make and influence the actions that we take. A person??™s upbringing and the environment in which they are raised and pressure for conformity influence our expressions of individuality in our society. But it is our true selves, our values and beliefs that help us to maintain our identities and to discover who we truly are.

The novel, ???The Kite Runner??™, written by Khaled Hosseini, displays the difficulties of maintaining a strong sense of individuality through many of the main characters. In the Afghan culture there are expectations set from childhood for all men to be strong and independent but with certain restrictions to conform. Amir is a main character from the novel who was brought up in an environment with strict culture, strong religious beliefs and a high social status. Constant pressures to conform and continuous pressure to be someone he is not overrode the expression of his individuality. He struggles to find and maintain his true identity as these pressures lead him astray. Everyday, Amir carries the weight of living up to his fathers unrealistic expectations. He has to deal with his father wanting him to be the complete opposite of who he is. He likes to read and write poetry but his father wants him to play soccer like real afghan boys do, but that is just not who he is. He constantly fights for his father??™s attention and often feels as though he is an outsider in his father??™s life. In fact he feels as though he is a failure in his fathers eyes. Even though Amir is faced with such difficult standard to achieve, he is able to grow and discover who he truly is even if it takes him a while to do so.

As previously stated, Individuality is as expression of personal freedom, and is often subverted into many different directions. There are so many different factors that make it difficult for someone to maintain a strong sense of who they are. There may be cultural pressures that make it difficult to maintain an individualistic approach on society, like Amir, one of the main characters from the Kite Runner. There are many different cultural pressures all around the world, and many have a huge impact on the way people grow and learn, as they may be unable to express their true identities due to cultural restrictions. They can be restrictive as everyone??™s values and likes differing in numerous ways. The media is also a factor that can manipulate and influence the decisions that we make in life, which can impact the development of our individual characters. Another factor that makes it hard for individuals to maintain their true identities may be parental support. An example from the Kite Runner is that one of the main characters Amir tries so hard to be himself, even trough cultural pressures, and his father is not accepting of his true identity. Our parents are the people who teach us the real values in life and can change and influence our beliefs as Amir??™s father tried to do with him.

It is hard to find out who we are or to maintain our own identities with society pulling us in all these different directions. Amir from the Kite runner is a good example of how he must deal with cultural pressures and expectations from his father but he is capable of pushing past these challenges and maintaining a strong sense of who he is. It is such as challenge to maintain who we truly are because of the communities in which we live, but with the right outlook on life and the maintenance of your own true values as a person, it is far from impossible.
